Dr Vanathy Varathan is a personable and experienced General Practitioner who has been part of Rowville Medical Clinic for several years. Dr Vanathy loves taking care of her patients in general practice as well as teaching fellow doctors and colleagues to become general practitioners. Her role as a teacher and examiner helps her to be up to date with the latest medical developments as well as improving the ability to explain conditions and treatments to her patients.

Dr Vanathy graduated from the University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka with her medical degree over a decade ago. She worked in many different hospitals in Sri Lanka in a variety of specialities. She grew to love dermatology, the study and treatment of skin conditions. She undertook her postgraduate qualification in Dermatology (MD – Dermatology) and became a consultant Dermatologist in Sri Lanka. In addition to dermatology, Dr Vanathy also worked as a General Practitioner in Sri Lanka for many years. After nearly nine years of service in Sri Lanka, Dr Vanathy emigrated to Australia to experience a different lifestyle and gain exposure to medicine in a Western country.

Dr Vanathy expanded her experience in Dermatology in Australia by completing a Dermatology Fellowship year at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. She also did postgraduate training and skin cancer procedures at the Skin and Cancer Foundation. She has worked in Skin Cancer Clinics and General Dermatology Clinics at Epworth Hospital, Berwick Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital from 2011 to 2014.

In addition to her work in the field of dermatology, Dr Vanathy has over 5 years of medical experience in Australia including working as a registrar of Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Goulburn Valley Health. While working in Australia she began to enjoy the variety and challenges found in all the different areas of General Practice. She followed her love of General Practice to become a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practice in 2014 (FRACGP). Needless to say, her special interests are dermatology, skin cancer detection and management. She also has a particular interest in Children’s health and Preventative Health.

Her current teaching roles include being an Examiner with the RACGP as well as being a Tutor and Examiner at the Victorian Medical Postgraduate Foundation (HEAL).

Dr Vanathy consults full time at our clinic.
